Damn those Brangelina rumours!

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 3 August 2007

In the past two months, Life & Style and In Touch have published no less than four cover stories predicting or even announcing Brangelina’s demise.Citing things as mundane as motorcycle rides or (gasp!) solo outings with the kids, the reports might lead one to think that every tiny daily detail is a threat to the couple’s happy home. And yet today, while the couple continues to vacation together in France, Pitt’s rep assures Usmagazine.com that the rumors are (once again) much ado about nothing. She tells Us,

“These magazines continue to write lies about our clients to sell magazines.”

Rest assured, Us readers, America’s most famous family remains intact.

How many famous couples have denied splitting, right up until the 11th hour? I know Bennifer the first did. So simply releasing a report saying ‘it ain’t so’ ain’t gonna convince a lot of ppl.

Um, wow… Stevie Wonder announces US tour!

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 3 August 2007

Stevie Wonder announces US tour

BY: Actress Archives | Friday, August 3, 2007

One of the all-time legends of music, Stevie Wonder announced today that he’s going to embark on his first United States tour in over a decade, starting August 23rd in San Diego and ending less than a month later in Boston on September 20th. It may not be a marathon, but a chance to see the legendary Stevie Wonder live is enough to make headlines worldwide. The tour by Stevie Wonder will cover 13 dates and feature stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta.

Stevie Wonder told the press this morning at a news conference in a public park at Century City, Los Angeles, as quoted by The BBC, “I thought what would be really wonderful would be to go out and perform throughout this country as we have a need for healing.”

Stevie Wonder will heal the country with his thirteen shows and likely do some of his more massive hits like “I Just Called To Say I Love You” and “Superstition,” along with countless others that still get constant radio airplay decades after they were first released. Wonder told the crowd that tickets for his tour will go on sale a week from tomorrow, August 13th.

Stevie Wonder didn’t just hold a press conference, he gave hundreds of people a glimpse of what they’ll get if they come to his US tour. He played several of his hits, including “Higher Ground” and “My Cherie Amour.” Stevie Wonder reportedly told the crowd that he had been “blessed with being able to sing and to write, to play – what better way can I think of than to go out and share my love with you through song.”

Stevie Wonder did imply that there may be more dates added to what is being called the Wonder Summer Nights tour. Two years ago, Stevie released his first album in a decade called A Time to Love, but didn’t tour at the time. The CD debuted at number five on the chart and has almost gone Gold in the last couple years. It’s a drop in the bucket for the career sales total of Stevie Wonder, which tops 70 million since he signed with Motown Records when he was only eleven. In the years since then, Stevie Wonder has produced an amazing 34 singles that hit the top ten on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in either the U.S. or the U.K. or both including “Fingertips,” “Superstition,” “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” “You Haven’t Done Nothin’”, “I Wish,” “Sir Duke,” “Ebony and Ivory,” “I Just Called to Say I Love You,” and “Part-Time Lover,” all of which hit number ONE in the States.

I feel bad for saying this, but I didn’t know he was still alive… :-/

LiLo too responsible to drive drunk?

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 3 August 2007

When Lindsay Lohan said she needed balance in her life, she probably wasn’t talking about bookend DUI charges.

In an interview with Elle that took place about 36 hours before she was arrested for driving under the influence for the second time in two months, Lohan said that she would never drive drunk.

“I wouldn’t violate…I’m much more responsible than that,” the beleaguered actress says in the magazine’s September issue. “I would not do that.”

When the above chat took place, Lohan was only looking at misdemeanor DUI and hit-and-run charges stemming from her single-car smashup on May 26 that preceded her decision to check into the Promises treatment center in Malibu.

A day and a half later, on July 24, Lohan found herself on the wrong side of the law again when she was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and felony possession of cocaine after she allegedly engaged her ex-assistant’s mom in an impromptu car chase in Santa Monica.

The 21-year-old child star turned tabloid fixture told Elle last month that the paparazzi who seemingly accompany her everywhere are just waiting for her to make a wrong move.

“It’s scary,” she said. “They’re looking for me to, like, trip, so they can be like, ‘Oh, Lindsay’s wasted and driving drunk.’ “

True enough, the shutterbugs have been on hand to capture more than enough of the Mean Girls star’s less than fine moments to keep the tabs in business—Lohan also addressed the panty-less pics of her that circulated on the Internet earlier this year, pre-commando Britney, taken as she was climbing out of a boat in Europe.

“It was once, and it was when I was in Venice,” Lohan explained. “And I was rushing through the room, threw the Prada dress on. And that’s what happened. And I didn’t even see the picture. I don’t look at that s–t, that’s gross. If I wear a dress I have underwear on.”

It was this sort of constant scrutiny that Lohan says made check into the Wonderland Center the first time back in January, she said, which she later referred to as a safe haven rather than as a medical necessity.

“I was growing up and going out a lot, and I needed to have a balance,” she said. “I was glad I went, because I needed to get away from everyone and I didn’t know how to do that. And I learned a lot there. A bunch of my friends—I was with them last night—they’re in AA for, like, years.”

Prior to her stay at Wonderland, Lohan’s mom, Dina, told E! News’ Ryan Seacrest that her daughter had been attending Alcoholics Anonymous for about a year. The younger Lohan later denied being any type of addict, however.

Coming full circle, Lohan’s interview took place over lunch at the Ivy, which, along with the starlet, is the target of a negligence lawsuit brought by a man who Lohan got into a car accident with in October 2005 after dining at the West Hollywood hot spot.

Plaintiff Raymundo Ortega is claiming that Lohan was drunk when her Mercedes smashed into his van, and that the Ivy was where she got the booze.

Lohan’s attorney, Alfred W. Gerisch, moved two weeks ago to have the suit dismissed, calling it “nothing more than an attempt to extort money from a celebrity by setting forth false and scurrilous allegations in a complaint.”

He cited the police’s accident report, which states that alcohol was not a factor in the crash and that Ortega was at fault because he made an illegal U-turn. Lohan, heading north on Robertson Boulevard, smacked into Ortega, who in turn hit a parked van.

Gerisch has also filed motions seeking to strike the DUI accusation in the complaint, calling it untrue and unsupported by the official accident report, and to have the judge currently presiding over the case step down, because his client, in light of her recent troubles, won’t be able to get a fair hearing.

Ortega’s lawyer fired back Thursday, stating in court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court that the police report is hearsay, because its author never saw how fast Lohan was driving and didn’t know whether she was drinking beforehand.

Attorney Robert Klein maintained in his filing that “there is some evidence she was served alcohol shortly before the accident” and that he has witnesses who will say they saw Lohan driving at least 62 miles per hour.

“The fact that Ms. Lohan was admitted to rehab for alcohol abuse shortly after this accident raises a presumption that at the time of this accident she was under the influence,” read the court documents.

Ortega, an L.A.-based busboy who earns about $300 a week, is “an honest, hardworking, decent man with a wife and children to support,” Klein states. “Instead of seeing if Mr. Ortega needed medical assistance, Lindsay Lohan fled the scene and took refuge in a retail store.”

Lohan’s publicist said at the time that her client was going about 30 mph while attempting to flee the ever-present paparazzi, although police determined that, like alcohol, persistent flashbulbs didn’t cause the crash, either

The lawsuit, however, takes into account Lohan’s frequent run-ins with the media, stating that she has become so “hypersensitive to paparazzi” that she “engaged in a habit, custom and practice of reckless driving” and was looking over her shoulder when she rammed into Ortega’s vehicle.

Ortega is seeking at least $200,000 in damages. A hearing is scheduled for Sept. 14.

Uh huh… drunk or not, she sure has had a lot of accidents and doesn’t seem to drive too responsibly…

Brit/K-Fed custody deal sealed due to kidnap fears?

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 3 August 2007

Britney’s kidnap fears

July 31, 2007 – 12:18PM

Britney Spears fears kidnappers could snatch her children away and asked a judge today to seal details of the custody-sharing deal she’s hammered out with ex-hubby Kevin Federline.

The pop star and K-Fed signed off on their final divorce settlement and agreed each will have equal time with their two toddlers – for now.

A source close to Spears’ ex-hubby said Federline may demand full custody of 22-month-old Sean Preston and Jaden James, 10 months, before the weekend if Spears continues to party and duck post-rehab 12-step meetings.

“Britney has not met her benchmarks following her rehab stint at Promises. She’s not doing after-care, like 12-step meetings,” the source said.

“She’s in denial. She’s saying she didn’t need rehab in the first place.”

While railing against the paparazzi, Spears’ lawyer also revealed the singer fears “criminals who might target the minor children for financial gain” despite being under the constant guard of a “full-time security service”.

For now, however, it’s Federline who Spears should be worrying about. A source told the New York Daily News that legal papers for K-Fed’s custody grab could be filed “as early as this week”.

Federline may try to alter the deal that calls for a 50/50 custody split, the source said.

Spears, 25, who had an emotional meltdown and shaved her head in February, also has denied she needed rehab, blaming her mother, Lynne, 52, for forcing her to go.

Spears is feuding with her mum, who has sided with Federline in the custody fight.

Full financial terms of the divorce settlement were not disclosed in court and Federline’s divorce lawyer Mark Kaplan could not be reached for comment, but TMZ.com reported Federline receives $US15,000 ($17,475) a month in child support and $US20,000 ($23,300) a month spousal support, according to a prenuptial agreement.

I’d say Britney’s on something other than alcohol. Paranoia accompanies certain drugs. I’ve never heard anything before about a kidnap threat.

And be honest-if she’s that worried, why wouldn’t she work more at keeping herself out of the spotlight when she has them.

‘It could have been a hell of a lot worse’

Toll from bridge collapse could be lowBy SHARON COHEN and ADAM GELLER, AP National Writers Fri Aug 3, 7:38 PM ET

MINNEAPOLIS – More than 100 cars and trucks and a school bus crawling bumper-to-bumper on a bridge that suddenly crashes into the Mississippi River seemed like a recipe for a massive death count.

But on Friday came what this city’s fire chief called a miraculous turn of events: the prospect that relatively few lives were lost.

Divers still searched through the swirling, muddy currents for cars and bodies. However, the death toll remained at five from Wednesday’s collapse, and authorities cast doubt on an earlier estimate that as many as 30 people were missing. They even said it could be as few as eight.

Of the roughly 100 injured, 28 remain hospitalized and only five were critical.

“We were surprised that we didn’t have more people seriously injured and killed,” Minneapolis Fire Chief Jim Clack told The Associated Press. “I think it was something of a miracle.”

Clack cited a list of reasons: a bridge design that minimized falling debris, a quick response by rescue crews and the rush-hour crawl that gave vehicles little momentum to plunge into the river.

In addition, experts say the speed and depth of the water in the Mississippi River were much lower than normal on the day of the collapse — largely the result of a drought. That may have made it easier for people to escape the disaster.

“It’s a horrible, tragic event. But it could have been a hell of a lot worse,” said Kent Harries, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering in the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Engineering.

Minnesota officials say they don’t yet know how many cars were traveling the span during the collapse. But based on the length of road, the lanes that were open, time of day and widely accepted traffic formulas, Northwestern University engineering professor Joseph Schofer estimated that between 100 and 150 vehicles were on the bridge.

Despite the low death toll, divers were still contending with a treacherous combination of sunken cars, broken cliffs of concrete and jagged rebar as they searched for bodies.

Firefighters pulled the fifth victim, the driver of a tractor-trailer that was engulfed in flames, from the wreckage late Thursday. Video of the burning rig — nose down in the crevasse between two broken concrete slabs — was among the most compelling images shown in the immediate aftermath of the collapse. The driver was identified as Paul Eickstadt, 51, of Mounds View.

Early in the day, authorities said that as few as eight people were still missing. However, they cautioned later that number could rise, in part because there was no way to know how many victims were in the water. Some people without family in the area may not have been reported missing, said Police Lt. Amelia Huffman, a spokeswoman.

The missing included a 23-year-old pregnant woman and her 2-year-old daughter, who was in the back seat of the family’s car when the bridge crumbled.

Sadiya Sahal, a 23-year-old immigrant from Somalia, called her family at 5:30 p.m. saying she was stuck in traffic, said Omar Jamal, executive director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center. That was her last phone call. “Her husband is destroyed. He’s in shock,” Jamal said.

Authorities still do not know what caused the 6:05 p.m. collapse. Engineers had numerous theories, including heavy traffic and construction work being done on the road at the time that might have put an undue burden on the span. The bridge was deemed “structurally deficient” by the federal government as far back as 1990.

Minnesota transportation officials spent another day dealing with scrutiny arising from a series of reports and inspections over the years that raised alarm about the bridge, including rust-eaten steel beams, missing bolts and cracks in the welding that held load-bearing parts together.

A consulting company that thoroughly examined the bridge noted that one possible fix — steel plating of fractures — carried a “relatively high cost,” according to a January report. Transportation officials deny that cost pressures swayed their decisions.

President Bush was scheduled to visit Saturday, and first lady Laura Bush toured the scene Friday morning. She praised the rescuers who rushed to the bridge in the chaos after the collapse — a sentiment echoed by the fire chief in explaining why more people didn’t die. Because the bridge was located near the heart of downtown, several emergency crews and residents were close by.

“We could not have done it as firefighters alone. It took more people than we had. It was organized. It was pretty calm,” Clack said.

Authorities and engineers were in agreement that the truss-style design of the bridge played a big role in saving lives. The steel that supported the bridge was below the structure — as opposed to above the span in more traditional bridge designs.

“I think that was a lifesaving feature,” said Schofer. “They had this huge advantage. They weren’t crushed by steel.”

Clack said that even though the collapse occurred during rush hour, the heavy traffic was an advantage because the cars were almost stopped and didn’t have much momentum. Because of that, the collapse was less likely to hurl moving cars into the river.

“They didn’t have forward velocity,” he said, “so when the bridge fell, they went straight down.”

While the entire span covers 1,907 feet, only 458 feet is directly over water, supported by giant pylons. The rest of the bridge rises over sloping banks and tidal flats of the river channel.

The irregular slope of the riverbank on the south side of the bridge turned out to be a good thing. When that portion of bridge snapped at the middle, the support pylons held, and the roadway only had a short distance to fall until it was caught by a drop-off just before the river.

On the north side of the bridge, however, the bank slopes down in a steady angle to a broad tidal flat. As a result, when that portion of the bridge crumpled, there was nothing to catch it.

That was evident to Dr. John Hick, assistant medical director for emergency medical services at Hennepin County Medical Center, who noticed that injuries on the north end of the bridge were much more grave.

Another factor that may have limited the death toll is the behavior of the river itself.

Mark Rosenker, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said investigators were particularly interested in learning why a part of the bridge’s southern span shifted as it collapsed. That was the only part of the bridge that shifted, and it could help pinpoint the cause.

Scott Bratten, who regulates locks and dams on the river for the local district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said that because of the drought currently affecting Minnesota, the water at the time of the collapse was flowing at just a third of its normal speed.

That may have made it easier for people in cars to escape them, and it almost certainly made it easier for rescuers to make their way into the water and help the dazed and injured.

“During the spring it’s a raging torrent in there and it would be a very dangerous place,” said Whitney Clark, executive director of Friends of the Mississippi River. “The low water I’m sure was a factor in not making currents very much of an issue … If this had happened during the spring snowmelt or something it would have been a much different situation.”

___

Associated Press writers Matt Crenson, Henry C. Jackson, Brian Bakst and Martiga Lohn contributed to this report.

I really hope that the toll stays low. This was such a horrible shock. I’ve prayed for the victims’ families, and for the survivors–they are going to have some horrible trauma to overcome…

Nicole favours county jail

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 3 August 2007

A pregnant Nicole Richie wants to serve her time for driving under the influence of drugs in the Los Angeles County jail, authorities said today.Richie’s lawyer contacted the county Sheriff’s Department earlier this week and indicated the reality TV star wanted to serve her four-day sentence in county lockup rather than a city jail, sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said.Whitmore said he had no additional details, including when Richie might surrender to begin the sentence. She must complete it by September 28.

At the county jail, inmates often service only a fraction of their sentence for a variety of reasons, including overcrowding and good behaviour.

A call to Richie’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, was not immediately returned.

The county has a special women’s-only facility in Lynwood. It is the same place where Richie’s friend Paris Hilton recently completed a 23-day stay for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

Richie, 25, was arrested in December for driving the wrong way on a freeway in Burbank.

The daughter of Lionel Richie, who confirmed earlier this week that she is nearly four months pregnant, pleaded guilty last Friday to a misdemeanour charge in a deal with prosecutors that helped her avoid a potential year in jail on her second DUI conviction (she had an alcohol-related conviction in 2003).

Richie was ordered to spend 90 hours, either in county jail or at any city jail in the county that would accept her.

She would have had to serve the full sentence in a city lockup, while the county allows time off for good behaviour.

In addition, many city lockups are small facilities that cannot provide the necessary medical care for pregnant inmates.

So, is it because of the medical care for pregnant inmates or for the chance for time off for good behaviour? (In either case, she’s only serving FOUR FREAKING DAYS!!! Give me a break!!) Or does she just idolise Paris, and simply must serve her time where her bff did?

‘Nicole made mistakes’: Lionel

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 3 August 2007

Lionel Richie: Nicole made mistakes08/03/2007 2:56 PM, AP
Lionel Richie says his 25-year-old daughter, Nicole, has “made some mistakes in her life,” but that he raised her to take responsibility for her behavior. “She has not blamed others for her problems and is growing up very quickly, albeit in the heat of the media spotlight,” the 58-year-old R&B singer told Usmagazine.com.

“My father taught me to stand straight and take whatever punishment or hardships were the result of my own actions, and I am proud that I was able to hand that philosophy down to my daughter,” he said.

Nicole Richie was sentenced last week to four days in jail and ordered to undergo drug and alcohol treatment. She pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of drugs.

She was arrested Dec. 11 for driving her sport utility vehicle the wrong way on a freeway in Burbank.

Sheriff’s officials said the reality-TV star will serve her sentence at the same county jail in Lynwood that housed her “The Simple Life” co-star, Paris Hilton.

Richie has until Sept. 28 to serve her sentence.

On Tuesday, Richie told ABC News that she is four months pregnant with her first child. Her boyfriend, Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, is the father.

“Her pregnancy has given her a new perspective on life in general,” Lionel Richie said, adding, “In spite of what has happened, I continue to love her and cherish our relationship.”

No shit, really? I thought she was taking 4 days in jail for fun! He may have raised her to take responsibility for her mistakes (still debatable), but he didn’t raise her to drive responsibly or to ‘just say no’ apparently.
