Hope their god has deep pockets

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 2 November 2007

Westboro Baptist Church–that disgusting group of people who picket service-members’ funeral and spread venom like ‘God hates fags’ and ‘Thank God for dead soldiers’ and blame the Iraq War on America’s tolerance of homosexuality–were on the wrong end of a $10+ million judgment Thursday.

The church was sued by Albert Snyder, after they picketed his son Matthew’s funeral.  Lance Cpl Matthew Snyder was killed in Iraq.  A Maryland jury found them guilty of invasion of privacy and intent to cause distress.

The group’s lawyer argued the group’s actions are protected under the First Amendment’s freedoms of speech and religion; they are confident that the verdict will be overturned.

‘Oh, it will take about five minutes to get that thing reversed,’ boasts Westboro’s Pastor Fred Phelps.

I’m not so sure.  The Supreme Court has been less tolerant and recognises that speech comes with responsibilities and limitations (the oft-cited shouting ‘fire’ in a crowded theatre for example).   With one of the grounds for liability being intent to cause distress, I think that this verdict will hold, although I also think it will make it to the Supreme Court.

A precedent has now been set however.  People are taking a stand against this vile organisation and collectively saying that this hatred is not welcome.

  1. I read a post from another blogger on this subject. Then I scrolled down a few blogs and saw one from Westboro. They are happy as they could not have bought this publicity. I didn’t post their for fear of becoming a target of their wrath.

I wouldn’t post either, but only because it’s a waste of ‘breath’. There are some people you can argue with and others you can’t. They fall into the latter.

As for publicity, they get plenty of it, every time they target a service member’s funeral. This is nothing.

I think they missed the part of the christian bible that say Judge not and ye shall not be judged. I’d love to be a fly on the wall at THEIR judgment day! Oh, and the term Christian means Christ-like. So therefore, by their actions, they declare themselves NOT to be Christians. Because, although I may not be Christian, I KNOW that Christ didn’t act like this.

  3. Have you seen the YouTube documentary on them. I only got through about 10 min before I couldn’t stand it anymore.

I can’t find the long documentary but if you search on youtube you have plenty of videos to figure out what it would be like. I will look some more when I have the time.
