As I was reading TMZ…

Posted by gnn1 on Sunday, 23 November 2008

something struck me.  First, I wondered, as I do every time I read it, why I WAS reading it.  But that’s a story for another day.

The story was Vote Board to Robbins: Turn Pissy into PSA! and the part that struck me was a comment, meant to be prideful, from a representative of the BoE (Board of Elections):

“In our city of 8 million people with 4.6 million registered voters, 2.6 million registered voters went to the polls on Election Day.”

Now, okay.  I can deal with only 57.5% citizens being registered.  Really.  Because I’m guessing that a significant percentage of the remaining 52.5% are minors or otherwise ineligible.

No, the part that struck me was pride in a not even 57% voter turnout rate!  4,600,000 registered voters, and 2,600,000 turned out to vote.  (Please note the preceding figures apply only to NYC).

In a country where ALL citizens have only been eligible to vote since 1957 (see a note at the end), and blacks and poor whites were often forbidden from voting because they couldn’t pay the “poll tax” or pass a literacy test until 1964, a 56.5% voter turnout rate is utterly and TOTALLY inexcusable.  Even on the federal level, it’s estimated that only around 62% turned out.

To this I can only say:  WHAT THE FUCK, AMERICA?!

Voting is a privilege that can be and has been taken away, whether by the government or by other citizens so desperate for their candidate to win that they would tell voters that they are to vote on a different day (as happened in the last election).

It is still your right, but dammit, if you don’t USE your right, you may well LOSE IT!

Why am I shouting? you ask.

Am I angry? you say.

YOU DAMN WELL BET I AM!

We live in a country where we are lucky enough to have the right, the privilege, to vote.  Many, MANY millions of world residents do not.  And people are apathetic or just LAZY enough to ignore it!

*sigh*

The sad thing is… this projected turnout…?  It’s the highest in FORTY FOUR YEARS.  In 1964, 61.9% of registered voters turned out.  In 1996, not EVEN half did–only 49.1%.

It’s your right, use it or lose it.

PS: If you didn’t vote in the last election, and you were eligible, I better not hear you bitching at ALL about a) how the election turned out, or b) the state of affairs for the next 4 years.  You all that didn’t exercise your right to speak up, just lost your right to bitch.

2008: Dr M. McDonald, George Mason University

*American Indians, despite becoming legal US citizens in 1924, were not always allowed to vote.  That right was governed by the individual state until 1957.  “Indian Citizenship Act” Library of Congress, American Memory, Today in history

Because Robbers Always Knock First…right?

Posted by gnn1 on Saturday, 1 November 2008

So a 12 year old–TJ Darrisaw–was killed (his father and younger brother injured) on Halloween by a guy with an assault rifle, after the kid made the mistake of doing what people DO on Halloween and knocking on doors.  The guy, Quentin Patrick, had been robbed previously this year, which apparently (in his mind) makes it okay to shoot first ask questions later when someone KNOCKS on his door (because there’s a new breed of robber doing just that, I’m sure).

Twenty nine shots, minimum, BEFORE opening his door.

Yes, we really need assault rifles in our homes, people.  To keep us safe from four foot tall trick or treating robbers.

Sorry but you can’t stay, your son’s too much of a burden

Posted by gnn1 on Saturday, 1 November 2008

Australia is full of controversial moves in terms of visas and citizenship applications, so this shouldn’t be a huge surprise, but I think that it’s more disturbing than most.

The Aussie government rejected the request for permanent residence filed by a German doctor, Bernhard Moeller, for himself and his family because his son has Down’s Syndrome.

According to the government, the boy, Lukas, “would pose a burden on taxpayers for his medical care, education and other services.”  Currently, he “attends a mainstream elementary school, where he has an aide, and receives speech therapy.”  Yet he also “plays soccer, cricket, golf and table tennis.” so he isn’t THAT low functioning.

Dr Moeller has said “we are absolutely able to support him, and I don’t want him to rely on any government pension anyway. He’s well looked after. And actually, he can contribute to the community here. He already is contributing to it.” (He didn’t specify how Lukas is contributing).

The doctor was recruited to fill a critically needed internal medicine position (he is currently the only internist in a community of 54,000).

Dr Moeller plans to file appeals.

LiLo, Paris, and Britney–coming (together!) to a TV near you?

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 31 October 2008

Oh God I hope this isn’t true.  PLEASE god let it be false.  The TV show that no one would’ve dared dream up has apparently BEEN dreamt up…

Scandalist is posting that the three trainwrecks may appear together in (of all things) a sitcom.

Um, couldnt they just put the three of them toghether (Real World or Big Brother style) and get the same laughs?

Then again… maybe not.

Johnny Depp: Taking “Mad” Hatter to new levels

Posted by gnn1 on Tuesday, 21 October 2008

Well… normally when one says they’ll eat their hat… well, they WON’T.  But Johnny, playing the Mad Hatter in a Tim Burton production of Alice in Wonderland, actually chowed down on the not-edible object.  I suppose that’s one way to get your daily dose of, uh, *cough* fiber?

I think this is grounds for divorce in some states…

Posted by gnn1 on Saturday, 18 October 2008

Katie Holmes was spotted after the premiere of her Broadway show (in which her acting received mixed reviews) looking less than her usual hawt self in NYC.  My only guess is that Tom wasn’t home to stop her from walking out the door, because no self respecting gay man *cough* would let a woman out in those clothes

The gene pool needs a few less lifeguards

Posted by gnn1 on Wednesday, 7 November 2007

You gotta be fuckin stupid to walk into a cop shop smokin pot. No, I’m not making it up–I couldn’t:

DANBURY, Conn. – A man is facing drug charges after he allegedly walked into the Danbury police station puffing on a marijuana-filled cigar.

Capt. Robert Myles says Scott Snow walked into the station early Saturday and blew smoke from his cigar into a small opening in the bullet-resistant glass separating desk officers from the public.

Myles says the 24-year-old man was told there’s no smoking inside the building and he allegedly stubbed out the cigar on the counter.

Officers came out and smelled the distinctive odor of marijuana and arrested Snow.

Police say they found more alleged marijuana in Snow’s pants. He has been released after posting bond.

It’s all the fans’ fault-Kiefer

Posted by gnn1 on Monday, 5 November 2007

Yeah, another celeb who can’t take responsibility for his actions.

Kiefer Sutherland is blaming his (soon to be former?) fans for his recent DUI conviction.

See, it’s all their faults because they took pix of him stumbling to his car–which then appeared online and could have been used as evidence in court.

So now he won’t sign autographs.

Big loss…

One for the WTFF (What the Fuck Files)

Posted by gnn1 on Saturday, 3 November 2007

Oh.

My.

Gods.

From PerezHilton:

A woman named Nicolle O’Neill is suing Paris Hilton.

Why? She claims that the heiress stole her look.

In a personal injury complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Oct. 18, O’Neill alleges that she suffers “emotional distress” because of Hilton and accuses the socialite of ripping off her style, including fashion-related “patens” [sic] and “stiling” [sic] tips.

Oh, yeah. Nicky’s court filing is handwritten!

Two pages of documents spell out specific charges against Paris, including a claim that she stole O’Neill’s idea to expose her “je-streeng underware (bikiny)” [sic] under her pants. O’Neill also claims Paris swiped her idea to shop in vintage stores for ’60s-style dresses.

Nicky wants Paris to pay “billions” in damages.

Is Paris even worth that much?

Sorry Arnie

Posted by gnn1 on Sunday, 28 October 2007

but you’re wrong.  Arnold claims that he has never taken drugs, despite using marijuana.

“It’s not a drug, it’s a leaf.”  Yeah, that ranks right up there with “I didn’t inhale.”

Drug: Any substance, other than food, that is used to prevent, diagnose, treat or relieve symptoms of a disease or abnormal condition. Also refers to a substance that alters mood or body function, or that can be habit-forming or addictive, especially a narcotic.  [http://www.dana-farber.org/can/dictionary/?index=d]

I think it’s safe to say that pot is a drug under that definition.

They have some effin balls!

Posted by gnn1 on Thursday, 20 September 2007

Found this in odd news:

CANBERRA (Reuters) – A lesbian couple in Australia are suing their doctor after they had twin girls from an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) procedure when they only wanted one child. The two women are seeking more than $400,000 (Australian dollars) (171,941 Great Britain Pounds; $322,893 US Dollars) in damages to help pay for the cost of raising the second child, including private school fees, saying they made it clear to their doctor that they only wanted one baby.

The twins are now three years old and the civil case, the first of its kind in Australia, has prompted debate about the value of children and role of parents.

“The litigation involving twins already three years old undermines the importance of parenthood,” conservative government Senator Guy Barnett said on Thursday.

“We seem more intent on preserving and pandering to the wishes of adults, than we are in protecting the rights of children,” he said.

Barnett called for banning same-sex couples and unmarried women from access to publicly-funded IVF services, sparking a new moral debate ahead of national elections, due at any time.

The case is being heard in Canberra, where letters published in the local Canberra Times newspaper overwhelmingly criticised the legal action after the birth of two healthy children.

“The child’s identity is subsumed to the whim of the mother who has bought the sperm and paid the IVF clinic,” columnist Angela Shanahan wrote in The Australian newspaper.

“Ultimately the result is the child as product, robbed of its unique identity.”

The court has ordered a gag on the identity of the women, who used donor sperm from a Danish doctor for the IVF treatment in 2003 which resulted in the birth of twin girls.

The court has heard that they signed a consent form to allow two embryos to be implanted, but specifically told their specialist they only wanted one embryo implanted.

The court was told the birth of the twins had created considerable stress within the couples’ relationship, but lawyers for the doctor said that almost every couple who had a child went through similar strain.

It takes a lot of nerve to sue your doctor for having twins.  And I am sure they were told and ignored that the doctor couldn’t guarantee a single birth.

And why the fuck should they can sue for PRIVATE SCHOOL fees?!  This is just fucked up all over.

She’s a Slave 4 partying

Posted by gnn1 on Thursday, 20 September 2007

Just hours after a judge warned her that she had a substance abuse problem and that she would be randomly drug tested twice weekly, our train-wreck du jour was out partying hard again.

NY Daily News reports that she

‘spent a long time hanging out in the bathroom of Hyde.’

The bathrooms are a favourite spot to do drugs.

She then appeared at Winston’s and was already haggard looking when she arrived.  She also spent time indulging in starlets’ favourite activity-table dancing.

Way to go, Brit Brit.  You show that judge that he can’t control you!

Better late than never?

Posted by gnn1 on Sunday, 16 September 2007

It only took a security guard who claims he was kicked in the head by rocker Axl Rose (Guns N’ Roses) 11 years to file a lawsuit.

Gary Armijo claims he was kicked intentionally and that the blow left him with severe physical injuries.

Howard Weitzmana, Rose’s attorney, calls the suit

a pathetic attempt to get money from Axl.

I’m inclined to agree.  This reeks of extortion, and I hope Rose files a counter-suit.  ELEVEN YEARS?  C’mon!

WTF, Whoopi?!

Posted by gnn1 on Tuesday, 4 September 2007

Whoopi Goldberg defended Michael Vick’s role in dogfighting on The View.  She is quoted as saying:

“He’s from the South, from the Deep South … This is part of his cultural upbringing,”

May I point out that in her own lifetime, racism was part of many white people’s cultural upbringings?  So was owning slaves.   Neither of those is something she would defend, I’m sure!

Shame on you, Whoopi!

Sad part is-he’s not joking

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 31 August 2007

Happy Monday’s star Bez is apparently a fucking moron.  He is quoted as saying:

Pete Doherty is talked about all the time but he’s a fucking lightweight. He spends more time in rehab than he does taking drugs for fuck’s sake. Winehouse is the same, she’s got a lot to prove. There are too many part-time rock n’ rollers these days. They should get out and have a good time. I’ve not spent a minute in rehab in 25 years and I’m alright.”

Uh, yeah…that last part is debateable.  Fuckin jackass.

Voldemort can sing?

Posted by gnn1 on Sunday, 26 August 2007

This is just wrong, okay?  Let me get that out right now.  I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, and this is serious just wrong!

Contact Music is reporting that casting is under way for a Harry Potter musical.  All singing, all dancing.  They plan to play Quidditch, in a theatre!  And have singing showdowns between Harry and Voldemort!  Does anyone else see something wrong with this?!

Oh gag…another TV resurrection

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 24 August 2007

American Gladiators is making a return.  Why?  Some shows should just be left alone.

Starpulse is reporting that NBC will bring it back as a mid-season primetime series.  It will include the latest technology, special effects, and water skills.

Celebrating the everyday, true American heroes — weekend warriors who excel and take pride in their physical fitness — contestants will go up against the show’s gladiators — charismatic and eclectic warriors — in the ultimate David & Goliath battle. As in MGM’s traditional “American Gladiators” franchise, everyday amateur athletes compete against action stars and stunt professionals in contests of physical strength and endurance. The series will include such classic events as The Joust, The Wall, Hang Tough and the Eliminator.

I sincerely doubt I’ll be tuning in.  Eight shows a week (which is how many I watch) is too many as is…
