Holy Stupid Lawsuit Batman!

Posted by gnn1 on Wednesday, 12 November 2008

This is too absurd to make up!  The mayor of a town in Turkey is suing Warner Brothers and Christopher Nolan, for using his town’s name without permission.

The name of the town?
Why, Batman of course.
Never mind that the series started nearly 70 years ago.
Never mind that it’s a reflection of the character’s alter-ego (ie LITERALLY Bat Man)

“There is only one Batman in the world,” Kalkan said. “The American producers used the name of our city without informing us.”

No one from the town of Batman has explained why it took so many years to take legal action. Batman first appeared as a comicbook character in 1939 and the “Batman” TV series started in 1966. Tim Burton‘s first bigscreen rendition for Warner Bros. came out in 1989. Undoubtedly the fact that “Dark Knight” is about to pass the $1 billion mark at the B.O. played a part in stirring the ire of the Turkish hamlet.

The mayor is prepping a series of charges against Nolan and Warner Bros., which owns the right to the Batman character, including placing the blame for a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate on the psychological impact that the film’s success has had on the city’s inhabitants.

Just… wow.

Balfour may walk

Posted by gnn1 on Saturday, 8 November 2008

Jennifer Hudson and Julia King must be nervous.

William Balfour, the only suspect in the Hudson/King slayings may be out of jail Monday.  He’s currently held on paraole violations (still unnamed as far as I can tell) and has a hearing Monday to determine if he did violate terms of parole.  If he didn’t, he could walk a free man from the hearing.

Police would have to formally charge him in the triple homicide at that point to keep him behind bars.  Assuming they have evidence to make such a charge legal.

Of course, if Balfour is found to have violated his parole, he returns to prison.

Who’s the Biggest Loser here?

Posted by gnn1 on Tuesday, 4 November 2008

Anthony Badalamenti has been arrested and charged with second-degree assault, possession of a dangerous weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.  The trainer featured on The Biggest Loser has allegedly been beating his girlfriend’s 6 year old boy (she was also arrested).

The landlord, who lived below the family called the police, saying he heard the child’s cries for nearly a month.

He had considered it a private matter until Friday evening when once again he heard the child’s screams:  “The child was pleading for mercy. I said, ‘That’s it, I can’t take it anymore.’ “

Because Robbers Always Knock First…right?

Posted by gnn1 on Saturday, 1 November 2008

So a 12 year old–TJ Darrisaw–was killed (his father and younger brother injured) on Halloween by a guy with an assault rifle, after the kid made the mistake of doing what people DO on Halloween and knocking on doors.  The guy, Quentin Patrick, had been robbed previously this year, which apparently (in his mind) makes it okay to shoot first ask questions later when someone KNOCKS on his door (because there’s a new breed of robber doing just that, I’m sure).

Twenty nine shots, minimum, BEFORE opening his door.

Yes, we really need assault rifles in our homes, people.  To keep us safe from four foot tall trick or treating robbers.

Hudson’s nephew confirmed killed, second person may be involved

Posted by gnn1 on Thursday, 30 October 2008

Police have confirmed that the body of a 7 year old boy found in the vehicle associated with Julian King’s Amber Alert is indeed the nephew of singer-actress Jennifer Hudson.

Police are questioning if William Balfour, being held for parole violations from a 1999 attempted murder conviction and the prime suspect in the triple murders, is the only person involved.

Hudson IDs her family, Balfour in Custody, nephew still missing

Posted by gnn1 on Sunday, 26 October 2008

Jennifer Hudson has ID’d her family’s bodies, according to Cook County (Ill) Medical Examiner’s office.  Her mother Darnell and brother Jason were shot and killed for unknown reasons a couple days ago, and her 7 year old nephew Julian King is missing and has been presumed kidnapped.  An Amber Alert was issued, and the FBI are involved (the link goes to Julian’s Amber Alert page and contains a photo and vital information.  If you’re in the Illinois area, PLEASE look).

The prime suspect in the killings, William Balfour, has been taken into custody for undisclosed parole violations, but the investigation is ongoing.

Clear the roadways in Clearwater!

Posted by gnn1 on Tuesday, 21 October 2008

Nick (Bollea) Hogan is out of jail!  I’m sure it won’t be long until he’s speeding up the streets again.

His mother Linda says that Nick went into prison as a juvenile and has experienced something that will mold and affect him for the rest of his adult life.

Right… that’s why so many juveniles never go back to jail again as adults.  Oh… wait… Hmm… How’s that go again?

Sorry guys, I’m with the studio on this one

Posted by gnn1 on Tuesday, 27 November 2007

From IMDb:

Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe’s hit new movie American Gangster is at the center of a new legal fight, after upsetting a retired Drug Enforcement agent in New York. The narcotics detectives are far from happy with the way they are depicted in the gritty new movie, which follows the fortunes of 1970s heroin kingpin Frank Lucas and the cops trying to bring him to justice. And one of the police officers, who worked the Lucas case, is now threatening to sue movie studio bosses at Universal for what he claims are “false and defamatory statements.” Gregory Korniloff’s attorney Dominic Amorosa has sent a cease and desist letter to the studio heads demanding a retraction of statements made in the film, according to The letter alleges that several key facts in the movie are misleading. Korniloff was the case agent for the DEA and “personally participated in the search of Lucas’ house… and the arrest of Lucas.”

I suspect that the DEA will lose this suit because the movie isn’t presented as a documentary but rather based on/inspired by actual events.  That gives the writers/directors/producers quite a bit of leeway and poetic license to add/remove facts as they wish (or as I call it, to Hollywood-ise the story).

The gene pool needs a few less lifeguards

Posted by gnn1 on Wednesday, 7 November 2007

You gotta be fuckin stupid to walk into a cop shop smokin pot. No, I’m not making it up–I couldn’t:

DANBURY, Conn. – A man is facing drug charges after he allegedly walked into the Danbury police station puffing on a marijuana-filled cigar.

Capt. Robert Myles says Scott Snow walked into the station early Saturday and blew smoke from his cigar into a small opening in the bullet-resistant glass separating desk officers from the public.

Myles says the 24-year-old man was told there’s no smoking inside the building and he allegedly stubbed out the cigar on the counter.

Officers came out and smelled the distinctive odor of marijuana and arrested Snow.

Police say they found more alleged marijuana in Snow’s pants. He has been released after posting bond.

It’s all the fans’ fault-Kiefer

Posted by gnn1 on Monday, 5 November 2007

Yeah, another celeb who can’t take responsibility for his actions.

Kiefer Sutherland is blaming his (soon to be former?) fans for his recent DUI conviction.

See, it’s all their faults because they took pix of him stumbling to his car–which then appeared online and could have been used as evidence in court.

So now he won’t sign autographs.

Big loss…

One for the WTFF (What the Fuck Files)

Posted by gnn1 on Saturday, 3 November 2007

From PerezHilton:

A woman named Nicolle O’Neill is suing Paris Hilton.

Why? She claims that the heiress stole her look.

In a personal injury complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Oct. 18, O’Neill alleges that she suffers “emotional distress” because of Hilton and accuses the socialite of ripping off her style, including fashion-related “patens” [sic] and “stiling” [sic] tips.

Oh, yeah. Nicky’s court filing is handwritten!

Two pages of documents spell out specific charges against Paris, including a claim that she stole O’Neill’s idea to expose her “je-streeng underware (bikiny)” [sic] under her pants. O’Neill also claims Paris swiped her idea to shop in vintage stores for ’60s-style dresses.

Nicky wants Paris to pay “billions” in damages.

Is Paris even worth that much?

Hope their god has deep pockets

Posted by gnn1 on Friday, 2 November 2007

Westboro Baptist Church–that disgusting group of people who picket service-members’ funeral and spread venom like ‘God hates fags’ and ‘Thank God for dead soldiers’ and blame the Iraq War on America’s tolerance of homosexuality–were on the wrong end of a $10+ million judgment Thursday.

The church was sued by Albert Snyder, after they picketed his son Matthew’s funeral.  Lance Cpl Matthew Snyder was killed in Iraq.  A Maryland jury found them guilty of invasion of privacy and intent to cause distress.

The group’s lawyer argued the group’s actions are protected under the First Amendment’s freedoms of speech and religion; they are confident that the verdict will be overturned.

‘Oh, it will take about five minutes to get that thing reversed,’ boasts Westboro’s Pastor Fred Phelps.

I’m not so sure.  The Supreme Court has been less tolerant and recognises that speech comes with responsibilities and limitations (the oft-cited shouting ‘fire’ in a crowded theatre for example).   With one of the grounds for liability being intent to cause distress, I think that this verdict will hold, although I also think it will make it to the Supreme Court.

A precedent has now been set however.  People are taking a stand against this vile organisation and collectively saying that this hatred is not welcome.

They have some effin balls!

Posted by gnn1 on Thursday, 20 September 2007

Found this in odd news:

CANBERRA (Reuters) – A lesbian couple in Australia are suing their doctor after they had twin girls from an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) procedure when they only wanted one child. The two women are seeking more than $400,000 (Australian dollars) (171,941 Great Britain Pounds; $322,893 US Dollars) in damages to help pay for the cost of raising the second child, including private school fees, saying they made it clear to their doctor that they only wanted one baby.

The twins are now three years old and the civil case, the first of its kind in Australia, has prompted debate about the value of children and role of parents.

“The litigation involving twins already three years old undermines the importance of parenthood,” conservative government Senator Guy Barnett said on Thursday.

“We seem more intent on preserving and pandering to the wishes of adults, than we are in protecting the rights of children,” he said.

Barnett called for banning same-sex couples and unmarried women from access to publicly-funded IVF services, sparking a new moral debate ahead of national elections, due at any time.

The case is being heard in Canberra, where letters published in the local Canberra Times newspaper overwhelmingly criticised the legal action after the birth of two healthy children.

“The child’s identity is subsumed to the whim of the mother who has bought the sperm and paid the IVF clinic,” columnist Angela Shanahan wrote in The Australian newspaper.

“Ultimately the result is the child as product, robbed of its unique identity.”

The court has ordered a gag on the identity of the women, who used donor sperm from a Danish doctor for the IVF treatment in 2003 which resulted in the birth of twin girls.

The court has heard that they signed a consent form to allow two embryos to be implanted, but specifically told their specialist they only wanted one embryo implanted.

The court was told the birth of the twins had created considerable stress within the couples’ relationship, but lawyers for the doctor said that almost every couple who had a child went through similar strain.

It takes a lot of nerve to sue your doctor for having twins.  And I am sure they were told and ignored that the doctor couldn’t guarantee a single birth.

And why the fuck should they can sue for PRIVATE SCHOOL fees?!  This is just fucked up all over.

Better late than never?

Posted by gnn1 on Sunday, 16 September 2007

It only took a security guard who claims he was kicked in the head by rocker Axl Rose (Guns N’ Roses) 11 years to file a lawsuit.

Gary Armijo claims he was kicked intentionally and that the blow left him with severe physical injuries.

Howard Weitzmana, Rose’s attorney, calls the suit

a pathetic attempt to get money from Axl.

I’m inclined to agree.  This reeks of extortion, and I hope Rose files a counter-suit.  ELEVEN YEARS?  C’mon!

WTF, Whoopi?!

Posted by gnn1 on Tuesday, 4 September 2007

Whoopi Goldberg defended Michael Vick’s role in dogfighting on The View.  She is quoted as saying:

“He’s from the South, from the Deep South … This is part of his cultural upbringing,”

May I point out that in her own lifetime, racism was part of many white people’s cultural upbringings?  So was owning slaves.   Neither of those is something she would defend, I’m sure!

Shame on you, Whoopi!

Ugh. More of the Dick

Posted by gnn1 on Wednesday, 29 August 2007

Andy Dick wasn’t happy polluting Columbus OH with his presence (and piss).  Now he’s polluting his neighbour’s backyard.

Apparently he thinks he lives next door to a redemption center or a landfill.  He was pitching beer bottles over his fence into the neighbour’s yard.

Then, apparently he didn’t think he’d pissed them off enough.  He cranked up the volume after midnight resulting in a noise complaint.

One night, two cop visits, two warnings.  Three strikes he’s out: Police have indicated if he violates city codes covering parties (noise ordinances most likely), he will receive an actual misdemeanor charge.

He’s apparently also pissed off the principal of a local elementary school, but there was no elaboration on that.

He and Britney should hook up; they’d get along great!
