Alfred Hitchcock #1 director of all time

Posted by gnn1 on Sunday, 2 September 2007

British magazine ‘Total Film’ has named Alfred Hitchcock, director of psychological thrillers like Psycho and The Birds, the best director of all time (good call!).

Here is the complete list:

1. Alfred Hitchcock (Lifeboat, North By Northwest)
2. Martin Scorsese (The Departed, Goodfellas)
3. Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List)
4. Howard Hawks (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Rio Bravo)
5. Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather 1-3, John Grisham’s The Rainmaker)
6. Orson Welles (Don Quixote, Moby Dick)
7. Ingmar Bergman (Swedish films, including Saraband)
8. Stanley Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket)
9. Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong)
10. David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac)

Glad to see PJ (Peter Jackson) made the cut! His work on Lord of the Rings alone should earn him that honour! Martin Scorsese’s The Departed was a huge hit and earned a number of awards. David Fincher has directed a number of Bad Pitt’s films, including the recent The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons (Se7en and Fight Club are also Pitt films). This is a good mix of older and newer directors and there are some blockbuster films here. For once, I agree with critics’ selections.

Bit of Hitchcock trivia: he made a cameo in every film he made. In Lifeboat, the film took place almost entirely in a small…well…lifeboat, so he appeared in a newspaper as the before photo in a diet advert.

People magazine’s website is reporting that Owen has returned home following his suicide attempt.  A source said that he is not doing well mentally, but is grateful he didn’t die, and realises he almost did.

He is not currently in rehab as some media have reported, but is recuperating at home with friends and family present around the clock.

Owen, my thoughts and prayers have been with you since the news broke-get well!
